| Abstract | Evaluation of the naturalness of the present-day forests is getting more and more important in nature conservation and near-natural forest management. In our paper an evaluation technique is presented, that can be used on stand-level and is able to appraise the naturalness features by storeys and to include other habitat-structural indicators, too. In order to establish the naturalness grades compositional, structural and functional characteristics are taken into consideration, thus the canopy is appraised by its indigenousness, site tolerance, mixedness, character of crown-closure, species distribution, age structure and stratification. In case of shrub- and herbstories the species composition and the character of cover, while is case of site the damages are considered. Furthermore the presence of old trees and dead woods, occurence of regrowth and its quality are taken into account. With the help of point judging it may get clear, what naturalness index can be given to a certain stand and to which grade can it be ranged (1. natural, 2. near-natural, 3. moderately converted, 4. heavily converted, 5. man-made). This evaluation technique was tested on the spot, the experiences of which are presented by the author at the end of this paper. |
